A striking early 20th Century oval pendant centring on a reverse-engraved rock crystal tablet, depicting Hermes the Greek messenger of the gods striding dynamically atop a tortoise, caduceus raised and cloak in motion. The tortoise references the myth of Chelone, the nymph transformed by Hermes as divine punishment.
An unusual and finely executed subject, rendered with exceptional precision by an accomplished lapidary.
The crystal is mounted above a jet ground: its deep, velvety black providing a dramatic foil that makes the pale grey engraving luminous by contrast. The border is set with alternating white gold plaques of old-cut stones totalling approximately 0.20 carats. The reverse is finished in gold with a beaded frame, originally closed by a plug-in frame, now lacking. The pendant is offered with both its original 67 cm platinum chain and a later black silk cordelière with platinum clasp, the latter complementing the piece particularly well.
A pendant of considerable presence, worn to striking effect.
